"The module will introduce you to the concepts of space and place relevant to the
development of visual work and contemporary debates in photography. You will develop a
sense of place (and space), using photography as your investigative tool. Lectures, seminars,
reading, research and independent enquiry for this module and the associated module Critical
Studies: Photography and Visual Culture as well as demonstrations and introductions from
the associated module Photographic Techniques inform a photographic essay that you will
produce. Regular critiques in a variety of formats will be instrumental in supporting the
development of work and the progression of your abilities."
Assessment (100% of final grade)
"After identifying their location (through random selection using the grids on a map) you will base your visual enquiry solely on this space or place. Working with digital files taken from a range of formats which could include camera phones, compact digital cameras, DSLR’s etc, you should demonstrate a sense of place and consider the use of light, composition and significant detail. You are encouraged to visual explore aspects of their location which are normally overlooked and not considered in ‘traditional’ landscapes or interiors. This will be underpinned through the lecture series, additional contextual research and critical analysis. This awareness should inform your work."
